Knowledge Dock support Product Design Graduates @ New Designers

18 August 2005

With esteemed guests such as Sir Terence Conran, Dick Powell of Seymour Powell and most of the design community, the place to be seen was at the New Designers Exhibition preview night at The Business Design Centre, Islington, London.

For the second year running, Knowledge Dock was proud to sponsor the Product Design BSc/BA Degree graduates, who showcased their final year work in a prime spot just by the entrance, capturing a large and varied audience.

Richard Wheeler, Head of Knowledge Dock said ‘Our Product Design Lab has very close links to the Product Design Degree and we are only too pleased to support the students in their external showcase event. Positive exposure of this magnitude  can benefit both our University and Knowledge Dock simultaneously and show that we are at the forefront of knowledge transfer in London.’

What made this event especially significant was that the graduates organised, sourced funds, designed and set up the show themselves (with a little help from the staff of Product Design), which led to a superbly laid out and co-ordinated display. Large format visuals and imagery for the show were printed at the Fabric Print and Design Bureau, also based at the Knowledge Dock.

Matt Hurley, Design Manager of the Product Design Lab said ‘It is good to see the graduates benefiting from the skills they have learnt throughout the course of their degree. It takes great initiative, aptitude and strong team working skills to put together an external showcase like this, all qualities that an employer seeks in a design graduate. It’s not just about being a good creative.

Professor Roger Sale, Head of the Industrial Design Centre @ UEL said ‘This year’s Product Design Graduates have pulled together a fantastic show, which can only benefit their future careers. It was both professional in presentation and strong in ideas.

He went on to say ‘What is especially welcome this year is that our German exchange students from Braunschweig School of Art displayed their work they carried out here under our Erasmus Exchange Programme. The exhibition gave them an insight into the workings of what is perceived to be the design capital of the world.

The BSc Product Design and BA Product Design Futures programmes are three year full time or four year sandwich courses.
