UEL celebrates Asian Women’s Day – 13th November

07 November 2005

A dynamic programme of events has been lined up to celebrate this year’s Asian Women’s Day, to be held at the University of East London’s Longbridge Road campus on Sunday 13th November.

Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham, will launch this year’s event, which will focus on the theme of Citizenship and Diversity and include workshops, dance and entertainment performances, a fashion show for new Asian women designers, and an exhibition and bazaar to give local businesswomen the opportunity to promote their products and services.

The event has been organised by Knowledge Dock, UEL’s business services, in partnership with E3, a local Asian women’s networking and support group. The day’s primary aim is to promote the economic empowerment of Asian Women through education, employment and entrepreneurship.

Sonia Klein, Innovation Manager at Knowledge Dock, said: “Asian women have been described as the hardest to reach community in the UK. There are 88,000 Asian women here in the Thames Gateway region, and a grassroots effort encased in a fun-packed family day is an effective way to reach them.

“UEL boasts a very proud tradition of promoting cultural diversity, as reflected in the vibrant multicultural nature of our campuses, where students from over 100 nationalities and diverse backgrounds work and learn together. It is our hope that through a holistic approach to the promotion of educational and entrepreneurial opportunities we can help Asian women maximise their potential while maintaining a healthy work / life balance and their own cultural identities”.

Asian Women’s Day will provide a fun-filled day for all the family and a climax to Mayor Ken Livingston’s Diversity week. The EU Socrates project will also be hosting a forum at the event to discuss the various challenges faced by migrant women.
