SG Magnets Case Study

05 December 2005

SG Magnets is a key component supplier to many diesel injection systems manufacturers both in Europe and in the USA. New magnetic products are also being manufactured for the very latest traction control braking systems for cars. Being based in Rainham, Essex, SG Magnets was very keen to support the STEP programme and take a student placement on board.

STEP placed John Goodey within the company to act as a Student Engineer. This job mainly focussed on supporting manufacturing operations, but also focussed on several difficult longer term physics/engineering problems.

Ray Goosetree, the Team Leader who was in charge of the operations project, felt that the placement went ‘very well’ and explained that there were a number of tasks that John was able to perform. “We are in the process of manufacturing a new product line and not only did John assist us in that, but he also devised a very useful system for controlling stock. I think it was beneficial for him to be able to apply what he learned in class to a real world setting. He was able to see some of the manufacturing issues up front.”

In the long term the results from the project will support the advanced understanding of the co-design stage that is undertaken when SG Magnets works with potential clients. The project challenged John’s understanding of physics and engineering, resulting in a computer based model which will be used with future customers.

John Taylor, the Director responsible said: “John was able to apply difficult magnetic engineering concepts and formulae and achieve the goal of a simple to use but accurate working simulation of a magnetic diesel injector solenoid. For a summer placement project this was superb. The ability demonstrated was first class”

SGM has really benefited from the STEP programme and the support offered before, during and after the placement. We look forward to more involvement next year. We thank all those involved at STEP and UEL.
