The Satsuma Consultancy Case Study
31 August 2005
The Satsuma Consultancy was established in 2000 offering marketing, business development and communications services to commercial and public sector organisations. The Satsuma Consultancy is a versatile business and often works with a wide range of commercial clients operating in a variety of sectors including publishing, broadcasting, design and banking. Its public sector clients include local authorities, universities and business support agencies.
Since its inception the company has received numerous awards including winner of ‘Best New Company’ 2002 (East London & Essex Awards); winner of ‘Emerging Company of the Year’ 2003 (UK Black Enterprise Awards) and finalist in ‘Supplier of the Year’ 2005 (LACE Business Awards).
As proven by its list of accolades, Satsuma Consultancy looks for innovative ways to develop as a company and remain connected with its community. This is what led the company to work with the University of East London in participating in several activities including the Enterprise Bureau (EB) programme. This opportunity gave them a chance to build a strong relationship with the university and particularly its enterprising students.
Under the EB programme, a student was recruited to provide practical hands on support in two main areas of work such as assistance in organising the Thames Gateway Learning & Jobs Zone 2004 event (an affair held at Excel that focuses on careers, jobs and training opportunities for people living within London’s Thames Gateway area) and getting involved in the administration of the StartRight business support programme (a Single Regeneration Budget funded programme designed by the company). Godwin Ohajah, the Satsuma Consultancy’s Managing Director, was pleased with the student’s work and said, “Being a small but very dynamic marketing and business development agency it was very important for us to have a student who could ‘hit the ground running’. The student recruited under the Enterprise Bureau programme managed to do just that.”
When asked if the Satsuma Consultancy would work in league with the University of East London again Godwin seemed more than willing and stated, “Participating in the EB programme was a very positive experience.”
