Headbourne Ltd Case Study

22 September 2005

The company was introduced to the STEP programme in 2003 when they needed some fresh product design ideas. Having been satisfied with the student and the results, they did not hesitate to call on STEP again when another project became available and were keen to take on Donna Davie as their next student placement.

When asked why Headbourne Ltd. enjoys participating in the scheme, Gary Garber the Managing Director replied, “It benefits us as a company as well as the student involved. When we can identify a project that can be contained within 8 weeks, it’s a really useful way to get an ad hoc project completed.”

This year, such an opportunity arose. The products that the company were already developing had given them a fair bit of knowledge in the office product sector. However, they knew that with the right marketing plan, they could create an even wider product range using most of their existing goods. This would enable the business to appeal to a wider customer base as well as increasing their market share.

Gordon Williamson, the co-Managing Director said: “We were looking for new channels to dominate, but didn’t have the time to carry out the necessary research or develop a marketing plan. Donna was able to do this for us. The research and the plan enabled us to prioritise where to concentrate our resources. With her ideas I’m confident that we will gain entry into the office furniture market.”

The student’s efforts culminated in an insightful marketing plan which is in the process of being implemented. Additionally, the market research report produced by the student has been applied to product ideas, many of which are now showcased pieces in the Headbourne catalogue. Based on these successes both Gordon and Gary were pleased with the overall results and said: “Donna had a particular style about her and brought some flair into what she did. She was keen to meet deadlines and was prepared to challenge ideas. We were delighted with the results and there is no reason at all why we wouldn’t participate in more STEP projects in the future.”
