Zsuzsanna Nagy Case Study

13 June 2006

Originally from Hungary and nearing the completion of her degree programme in Product Design, Zsuzsanna has already featured her innovative work in leading design magazines nationwide, whilst facing a surge of interest from top manufacturers nationally as well as overseas, who are very keen to produce her uniquely graceful and captivating light designs.

Her latest breakthrough success arrived recently in the shape of a deal with John Lewis, where her award-winning Star lamp is available to the public for the first time through their major department stores such as Oxford St, Peter Jones at Slone Sq and at Bluewater Shopping Centre. “So far they’ve launched only the silver-white, reversible ceiling-pendant version. (they start at the major stores and if it sells it should go to smaller shops too.)

“I am pleased that my lighting designs are being manufactured and sold at John Lewis and going on market from last week,” says Zsuzsanna, modestly.

My UK manufacturer has got a great plan to invest in my work, and wish to produce the other versions of my Star Lamp. The table lamp and floor lamp – they're very happy to manufacture those, so hopefully it will soon it will be available in different colours, materials and many other stores too.”

Zsuzsanna is also extremely pleased with the support she has received from Knowledge Dock, especially with advice regarding the business aspect of being an up-and-coming product designer in demand.

“Knowledge Dock has been very supportive. I have already been to one of their workshops, and that was great: How to Setup Your Business, it was a very good one. The lecturer was very knowledgeable, plus I have been talking to Rob Moss, who has been helping me with contracts and legal issues. It's a big help that I've tried to look for legal advice elsewhere but it is hard to find (for students). It's really difficult; it's a lot of hard work. But when I was stuck, Knowledge Dock was always there.”

Expressively humble yet bustling with talent, Knowledge Dock firmly believe that Zsuzsanna’s present and future career prospects are looking as bright as ever.

“I’m putting my knowledge into practice and am becoming more and more a professional designer. I have been discussing business outside of the UK with other manufacturers, who are interested in marketing and selling my Star Lamp in the European Union. I have also been invited to other shows and exhibitions as a guest designer.”
